Default Apps for December 2025
Inspired by Jason’s post, these are my current default and preferred apps for December 2025.
- Browser: Vivaldi. It’s the goat.
- Search Engine: Kagi. I don’t like their CEO, but everything else sucks.
- Password Manager: Bitwarden. Also the goat.
- Email: Fastmail. Here is how I have it configured.
- Calendar: I am between TickTick and Apple Calendar. AC used to be connected to Nextcloud via CalDav, but Nextcloud keeps breaking and I’m starting to get annoyed.
- Todo: Between TickTick and Apple Reminders, although Reminders is the same story as Calendar.
- Notes: Obsidian for knowledge management and D&D notes; Apple Notes for quick info and lists.
- File storage: Mostly OneDrive, but trying out Owncloud Infinite Scale.
- Code Editor: VS Code, with a side of Vim and Sublime Text.
- Photos: Immich. Potentially my favorite self-hosted app.
- MFA: Bitwarden, Yubikey, and 2FAS
- RSS: Self-hosted FreshRSS with NetNewsWire as the client.
- Chat: Signal.
- Bookmarks: Linkding.
- Music: Apple Music and Jellyfin via Manet.
- Social Media: Mastodon on social.lol via Mona.
- VPN: Mullvad.
- DNS: Self-hosted AdGuard Home and Quad9.
- Ad Blocking: Vivaldi ad blocker and AdGuard Home.
- OS: Endeavour OS on desktop, Mac OS on laptop, and iOS on mobile.
